Unnata ® Aerial Yoga (unnata, meaning "elevated" in Sanskrit) combines traditional mat yoga with postures suspended in a soft, fabric sling a few feet off the ground. With the help of gravity and the fabric, we play, explore, and create space in our bodies with ease, as intended in traditional asana practice. Without the compression of the joints and spine we can find a vibrant, unencumbered, and balanced expression of each pose.
With the fabric as a learning tool, students often find "Aha!" moments that bring new life and understanding to poses they previously feared. Participants often alternate between sling and mat to facilitate body awareness and stay engergetically grounded. Through Unnata Aerial Yoga the fascia unwind, the mind quiets, core-strength is built, and participants leave feeling whole... a wonderful complement to your mat practice!
Another Yoga Fad?
Yoga principles such as ahimsa (non-harm) and mindfulness are the foundation of Unnata Aerial Yoga. Asanas (postures) are practiced with focus on breath, alignment, and meditation. The sling is no different than strap or block, intended to assist alignment and deepen your awareness.
Wear a shirt that covers your underarms completely. Bring a long beach towel or thick sweatshirt for padding until you are used to the feeling of the fabric. Do not use hand lotion before class and do not wear jewelry, belts, or clothing with grommets, gems, or anything that could potentially snag the fabric. Avoid shorts or very baggy clothing. Please trim/file your finger and toenails and avoid eating or drinking acidic liquids an hour prior to class. Please wear deodorant.
